Blues: ชะตาชีวิต เป็นเพลงพระราชนิพนธ์ลำดับที่ ๕ ทรงพระราชนิพนธ์หลังจากเสด็จขึ้นครองราชย์ และเสด็จพระราชดำเนินกลับไป ทรงศึกษาต่อที่ประเทศสวิตเซอร์แลนด์อีกวาระหนึ่ง ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้พระเจ้าวรวงศ์เธอ พระองค์เจ้าจักรพันธ์เพ็ญศิริ นิพนธ์คำร้องภาษาอังกฤษ วันเฉลิมพระชนมพรรษาพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวครบ ๒๐ พรรษา ในพ.ศ. ๒๔๙๐ ข้าราชการ นักเรียนและคนไทยในสวิตเซอร์แลนด์ ร่วมกันจัดงานเฉลิมฉลองติดต่อกันหลายวัน ในวันเสาร์ที่ ๖ ธันวาคม พ.ศ. ๒๔๙๐ มาตั้งวงเล่นดนตรีที่พระตำหนักวิลลาวัฒนา พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงดนตรีด้วย ในงานมีการขายลอตเตอรี่ สำหรับช่วยคนจน นอกจากการออกลอตเตอรี่แล้ว มีการทายชื่อเพลงพระราชนิพนธ์ใหม่ H.M.Blues ว่า H.M. แปลว่าอะไร ผู้ที่จะทาย ต้องซื้อกระดาษสำหรับเขียนคำทายใบละครึ่งฟรังซ์ วงดนตรีบรรเลงเพลงให้ผู้ร่วมงานเต้นรำโดยไม่หยุดพัก ระหว่างเลี้ยงอาหารว่างตอนดึก ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้พระเจ้าวรวงศ์เธอ พระองค์เจ้าจักรพันธ์เพ็ญศิริร้องเพลงพระราชนิพนธ์เพลงใหม่ H.M. Blues เนื้อเพลงมีใจความว่า "คนอื่น ๆ ที่ไม่ได้เล่นดนตรี ต่างก็อิ่มหนำสำราญกัน แต่พวกเราที่กำลังเล่นดนตรีต่างก็หิวโหย และไม่มีแรงจะเล่นต่อไปอีกแล้ว" ในงานไม่มีผู้ใดทายชื่อถูกเลยสักคนเดียว สำหรับคำร้องภาษาไทย ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ศาสตราจารย์ ดร.ประเสริฐ ณ นคร เป็นผู้ประพันธ์ แต่เนื่องจากในเวลานั้นคำร้องภาษาอังกฤษ ไม่ได้พระราชทานลงมา และเพราะต้นฉบับอยู่ที่สวิตเซอร์แลนด์ ดร.ประเสริฐ จึงใส่คำร้องภาษาไทย ที่มีความหมายออกมาคนละแบบ ลิขสิทธิ์: พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพล อดุลยเดช
